To achieve our goal of becoming 100% peat-free across all operations by the end of 2025, as set out in the RHS Sustainability Strategy, alongside helping the horticultural industry transition to peat-free, the RHS is working in partnership with Defra and industry on the ‘Transition to Peat-Free Fellowship’.
As part of this project, a baseline study was carried out in 2023 to gauge the progress of the industry in their transition to peat-free, and gather information on the transition from commercial growers going peat-free.
What does peat-free mean?
This list of nurseries have all been verified by the RHS as being 100% peat-free – there is no peat present in the growing media used for their plant production, including young or plug plants. These nurseries offer a wide range of plant types and are located across the country, with many online options too.
The list can be used by gardeners, growers and buyers to source 100% peat-free plants and share success stories. In due course, the survey will be repeated and the list updated to reflect the progress of the industry.

How to use this list
Nurseries are divided up by region. Some sell in-person only, some sell online only, and some sell both online and in-person. All those selling online are included under a separate heading at the end of the page.
Online-only retailers are also included in the relevant regional list, so that from a sustainability perspective, it is easy to see which suppliers are based locally to you.
