Level 3 Award

Dig deeper with enhanced horticultural research skills

The RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation is a fantastic opportunity for any horticulturist to support their continuing professional development. Delivered by the RHS’ School of Horticulture who have been training horticulturists for over 200 years, the qualification is aimed at people looking to enhance their horticultural knowledge in a specific area, and expand their academic writing skills

What you will do

Over the nine months of the qualification you will undertake research on a horticultural topic of your choice and complete a written project between 4,000 and 4,500 words, and undertake a professional discussion with an examiner.  You will have the opportunity to attend online workshops providing you with the skills and knowledge you need to undertake and write a body of research, and also have the support of a Project Supervisor to guide you through the process.

The qualification is completed entirely online, meaning you are able to study in your own time and work around your other commitments. The qualification consists of a total qualification time (TQT) of 90 hours, and we anticipate that students will spend on average approximately 2.5 hours per week on the qualification.

Skills you will learn

  • Writing a proposal
  • Academic referencing
  • Different research methods, including interpretation of findings
  • Different structure and presentation methods for a written body of research

  • Time and budget management
  • Problem solving
  • Project management
  • Communication
  • Ethical considerations for undertaking research

Entry requirements
To complete the Award you must be 18+, hold a full Level 2 horticultural qualification, and have a minimum of three months professional practical horticultural experience. If you don’t hold a full Level 2 horticultural qualification, but have a minimum of two years professional horticultural experience, you may be accepted onto the course after completing an additional written task to a suitable standard.

As this is a self-directed research based course, and not a practical course, students are required to draw on their existing horticultural knowledge and experience.

Please e-mail [email protected] if you’re unsure if you meet the entry requirements.

How much does it cost?
The qualification costs £800. You can choose between paying the full fee at the time of booking, or a 50% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking and the remaining fee one week prior to the first live session.
What will you get?
After completing the qualification, you will have achieved the Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation.
If you have already completed the Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture and Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Garden Planning and Applied Propagation, you will automatically be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture.
